Can you explain to me difference between downloading programs "Limewire" and "µtorrent" Do they both use Bit Torent protocol ?
My friends advise me to use "µtorrent" to reduce chances of getting virus ? Is this true ? If so why.I'm not familiar with the Limewire program. It uses a protocol other than Bit Torrent (BT) and it appears to require Java. I like µtorrent on Windows because it is very small and still fully featured. BT based dowloading is safer than some other P2P protocols because it typically uses a "tracker," which is a server that gives out lists of peers and verifies the original download information. So, if you can trust the tracker or even trust the site from which you got the ".torrent" file (which contains the download information including the tracker's address) then you should be able to trust the files that you receive via their torrents. (Even though the downloaded files themselves are all coming from other people. The files are verified with information from the tracker and torrent file.)
Some other P2P systems allow peers to exchange unverified files and this can lead to receiving files that are not what you wanted or expected. I just don't know if that's the case or not with Limewire/Gnutella.
To be fair, many of these other P2P systems have very good searching abilities built into the system. With BT, you generally have to find the file(s) yourself somewhere on the internet. So, it may depend on what sort of files you're looking for. I would heed my friends' advice and at least try a BT client like µtorrent first to see if it can do what you want.
